History
The origin of the Chilean Navy dates back to 1817. A year before, following the Battle of Chacabuco General Bernardo O'Higgins prophetically declared "this victory and another hundred shall be of no significance if we do not gain control of the sea. This led to the development of Chilean Navy, and the first legal resolutions outlining the organization of the institution were created. Chiles First National Fleet and the Academy for Young Midshipmen (predecessor of the current Naval Academy) were founded, as were the Chilean Marine Corps and the Supply Commissary. The British seaman Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald was hired by OHiggins to be the first commander of the Navy, who in turn hired an all-English language complement of officers and midshipmen, and crews of British, Irish and American seamen. He was a key figure in the war against loyalist forces in Peru. He later took control of the Valdivian Fort System but failed in his attempt to conquer Chiloé Island The Navys Hydrographic Office was founded in 1874 with Francisco Vidal Gormaz as first director. The Chilean war hero and martyr Arturo Prat is regarded as the ultimate example of the commitment of the Navy to its country, after his death while leading a Boarding (attack) onto the enemy ironclad Huáscar (ship) at the Battle of Iquique on 21 May 1879, during the War of the Pacific The anniversary of this battle is celebrated every year as a public holiday called Día de las Glorias Navales During the Chilean Civil War of 1891 a large part of the navy rebelled against the president José Manuel Balmaceda and critically helped depose him.Present
The 25,000-person navy, including 5,200 Marines, is directed by Admiral Edmundo Gonzalez. Of the fleet of sixty-six surface vessels (soon to be increased to seventy-four),twenty-one are major combatant ships based in Valparaíso The navy operates its own aircraft for transport and patrol; there are no fighter or bomber aircraft. The Navy also operates four submarines and a Submarine tender to support them, all based in Talcahuano The Navy permits the integration of Chiles Pacific and Southern island regions, thus integrating its disjointed geography. The transport of passengers, especially during the school year or in cases of emergency, together with the supply of provisions and fuel, are of key importance to the inhabitants of these insular zones. The Chilean Navy is generally considered to be among the most capable and professional in the Americas and is heavily aligned with significant naval powers such as the United States Navy and several European navies, most notably the British Royal Navy The institution regularly carries out civil operations whereby Navy professionals provide social assistance and health care to the civilian population, and provide support in cases of natural catastrophe. Image:Chilean Navy Saar 4.jpg It also undertakes preventative education campaigns for Chiles population on issues that include security on beaches and seaside resorts and measures to be taken in the case of a tsunami The most important naval bases and supply depots are (from north to south) in the Pacific Ocean Iquique Easter Island Valparaíso Talcahuano Puerto Montt in the atlantic zone: Strait of Magellan Punta Arenas, Chile in the Beagle Channel Puerto Williams and in Antarctica Captain Arturo Prat BaseWars
The Chilean Navy has fought the following wars: * Chilean War of Independence against Spain commanded by Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald (1810–1826) * War of the Confederation against the Peru-Bolivian Confederation (1836–1839) * Chincha Islands War against Spain (allied with Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru) (1864–1866) * War of the Pacific against Bolivia and Peru. The squadron is going through a modernization process due to the obsolescence of its main combat units. This led to the replacement of most of the larger units. Thus eight ships were acquired, all of them multipurpose frigates and fully operational. Four of them were old Royal Netherlands Navy ships, 2 "Karel Doorman" class frigate ("Almirante Blanco Encalada" and "Almirante Riveros")and 2 "Jacob van Heemskerck" class frigate ("Capitan Prat" and "Almirante Latorre"),and the other four ,belonged to the Royal Navy (1 type 22 "Almirante Williams" and 3 type 23, "Almirante Condell","Almirante Lynch" and "Almirante Cochrane"). Currently the Navy is involved in the construction in Chile of two Maritime Zone Patrol type ships, through the Chilean Navy Shipyards(Asmar) and the German company Fassmer .The first one is the "Piloto Pardo", and became fully operational in 2008, and the second unit of the same type, named " Comandante Toro " ,has entered service in late 2009. As a second stage of this project, it is considered the construction of 2 more units of the same type.It is said that the missile boats of German and Israeli construction , will be replaced by similar units of the corvette type. Likewise, the Navy supports the building of a life-size replica of the corvette Esmeralda in the northern city of Iquique. The Navy has recently replaced its only one tanker "Araucano" . A new fleet replenishment oiler called "Almirante Montt" (a U.S. Henry Kaiser class) ,is expected to arrive in 2010, and the obsolescent research vessel (Agor) "Vidal Gormaz" will be replaced by "Cabo de Hornos" (Cape Horn) , a brand new scientific ship built under the Medusa project in the Talcahuano Navy Shipyards. On the other hand a total of 8 Dauphin helicopters will be acquired, 4 of them are already in service. The fixed wing fleet is going to be updated with the replacement of the aging fleet of maritime exploration : 3 new CASA C-295 Persuader were already purchased and it is expected to be completed with a total of 8 aircraft of this type. The first aircraft, registered Naval 501 arrived in Chile in April 2010 and was officially incorporated into Navy's service on April 30, 2010 http://www.modocharlie.com/2010/04/presentacion-oficial-del-naval-501/]. The Chilean Navy is also considering to purchase 8x8 armored Stryker vehicles for the Marine Corps . The Chilean Navy has assessed 2 vehicles: the M1126 (troop transport version) and the M1128 (mobile support version equipped with a barrel 105 mm ). Alongside PVP Panhard will be also added to the force.SHOA
SHOA or Servicio Hidrográfico y Oceanográfico de la Armada de Chile (Spanish for Hydrological and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy) is an agency of the Chilean Navy managing situations dealing with hydrology and oceanography including tide and tsunami .Grades
